After a guest creates a new topic, they receive a popup stating that it will not be displayed until it's approved.

After clicking past that, the next screen shows :

Is that normal?

If a user was registered and post moderation is on, the user is redirected back to their post with a message stating that it won't be shown until a moderator approves it.

Sesquipedalian

Yes, that is normal.

When a registered user creates an unapproved post, SMF knows who the author is, which means that SMF can allow the author to view the post even though it has not been approved.

When a guest creates an unapproved post, SMF does not know who the author is, so it can't give the author access to the unapproved post.
I promise you nothing.

Sesqu... Sesqui... what?

Ok, thank you.

I'm thinking this might confuse my users (I know they'll question why there is an error box) and when hitting the back button brings them back to a blank post form.

Are there downfalls to me making it so guests are just redirected back to the board they created the topic in instead? That way we avoid the error message and the back button.

It's a simple edit in Sources/Post.php

I don't see any downfalls to that method.

Why not just use the existing toggle and send EVERYONE back to the board rather than back into the topic?

Maybe I'm missing something because I would not want to be sent back to the board after creating a topic.  ???
My pet rock is not feeling well. I think it's stoned.

That's my preference... I hate seeing the topic that I just posted in... why do I need to see that? I want to move on to the next post

Perhaps that's why your posts tend to contain so many uncorrected typos. ;)

Nah, I would not review a post anyway.  My additions has me on to the next post even before I'm done... ;)

My members are used to being brought back to their post, as it's been set that way since 2003 (Yabb SE days).

Thanks for all your input guys. I just want to make the upgrade goes as smooth as possible for my members. We just celebrated 20 years, so I'm looking forward to giving them v2.1 and all the new features it brings.

It's a user-configurable option to return to the topic.

IMAO, we should also adjust to error message to be a bit more verbose. Maybe "This topic doesn't exist on this board. The topic might have to be approved first, or the topic might have been deleted."

Edit: not sure if the setting can be configured for guests, though.

Es gibt hier im Forum ein deutsches Support-Board!

Kindred

It can be configured for default - which is what is applied to guests and new users...
