If there was a known date it would be posted in this board...we're working hard everyday trying to get things done and recently have sent a changelog to our Charter Members for the next release which means we're getting closer.

Also, when we do finally release our first public package, it will be a release candidate - not a final version.

Ah good that is good to hear. That should answer the question we keep hearing over and over again.

(trying to get back on topic) :P

You say that "it will be a release candidate" does that mean that there might not be many public betas?

*If this is asking too much just forget I asked.

Everything is still very speculative...one thing is for certain - the guys working on the code are doing A LOT of work on it. As soon as we figure out more, we'll post more.

"Release Candidate" is the term applied to anything between the final beta version and the final release, ie, a "candidate" for the final release. It's more stable than a beta version, but might still have some bugs or other minor issues to work out. Everyone will be able to download and run these versions. Hope this helps.

...You say that "it will be a release candidate" does that mean that there might not be many public betas?...

on the contrary, being a candidate for release is like being a candidate for president.  it implies you are one of many (betas) being tweaked, until one finally wins the nomination (release status).

Tyris

but in software it usually doesnt mean that there will be multiple candidates at one time... in fact with SMF I assume there will be one after another until one is released that is deemed stable and complete enough for v1.0 status.

[Unknown]

Sometimes multiple versions of certain features are made as candidates.  However, this is not always the case.

Tyris

can we expect this to happen with SMF...? or is it pretty much just gonna be getting better until release as each version comes out?

Cccddd

im pretty sure the team will release as many stable updates as they can to the charter members, and they will try to keep only the absolutely stable (and usually older) versions available to the public.

I've been pushing for a nightly build release personally, like some sort of weekly alpha release that is released on an as-is basis and gets no support at the helpdesk level. You can only say so many times "Don't install this version if you don't know what you are doing" before some idiot trys to install it on their own, but for some of us who know what we are doing, having access to a nightly build in some way would be a positive thing.

i dunno i just think that having an anonymous CVS would be a surefire way to keep just every joe-******up from installing it. and add one board for nightly builds just to keep the support issues from showing up with the stable releases...

logik

So when can we expect to see the final version? This Spring, Summer or even Winter?

ah ha, not asking for any exact dates, just a slightly generalized ETA based on the Seasons of 2004.
