Tabbed Categories?

Is there a way to arrange the categories in tabs?

Right now they display one on top of the other, but I think it would be better if one category was on the front as the default, and then there were tabs to unfold/switch/display the other categories.

Can I do this?

of course you *CAN* do it... you would just need to know how to code it....

If you can't, then you should ask in the SMF coding board or possibly the graphics board, since this would be, essentially a new theme.

I think it could be done as a MOD though, setting up the board index in a way that would separate the categories.  Maybe I don't fully understand what was done on that site though.

it's more of a theme thing than a mod thing....

Thank you! I will then investigate how to modify our theme to make that happen. 

I had hoped it was a built-in option.  I think the long-scrolling real estate of a long forum index is just too much finger work to tolerate sometimes.

no....   honestly, tabs are a poor concept, IMO....  they tend to depend on javascript (although HTML5 may open some doors there) and tend to mean that anything other than the first tab gets missed by most visitors to your site....

The first category at our website is the only one that would be frequented by new visitors.  The other categories are most used by our established members, so it's not important that they get high visitor traffic. 

The browsing ease of our established member base is our first priority and many have asked for a tidier set up.  I think tabs would be a good thing to try. 

I appreciate your feed back though.  Perhaps if we find away for the javascript to fail back into the default set up, it might work a little better.  I'd also be happy if the tabs initiated a page re-load.  Yadda yadda yadda - one must always keep working towards improvements by experimentation and exploring/testing new ideas and options.

Okay, well I was typing something, but this doesn't seem like it would really take long to write.  You would have to find a place to put the tabs, but other than that, it would be quite easy as long as what's going through my head atm would work.  I'll check it out and let ya know, but like Kindred said, it would rely on JS, and users don't tend to go past tab one, especially if that's the main reason to being there, but I would assume you'd throw announcements and what-not there.  Anyways, I'll get back to ya on this, and either tell ya yes or no whether I'll do it or not.
