Is it possible for members to post attachments without having to type a message? If so, how would I achieve this?

Once the attachment has been uploaded, the user can click on the blue arrow icon for the attachment in order to embed it within the body of the post. That will cause the post body to not be empty, and thereby allow the post to be submitted.
I promise you nothing.

All. Images, video, and audio files will display the image, video, or audio content directly. All other file types will show a link to the file.

Normally, there's not a lot of value to embedding an attachment that isn't an image, video, or audio file. But for the original poster's specific use case, it gets the job done.

It's more versatile than you would think...  Most browsers will insert an audio player if you insert an audio file in this fashion.  This is used pretty frequently on our forum.
