Change how forums are marked as read?

I'm running 2.1.14 and Style V2 Theme. I noticed that as soon as I read one post in a forum it marks the forum as read, even if there are other unread posts in that forum.

How would I modify it so it only marks in read if all posts in the forum are read?

Thank you.

Arantor

By completely rewriting the entire way post read status is tracked, from the ground up, because it's fundamentally not handled that way, and mostly impossible to retool sensibly to make it work that way from how it's done now.

It will also vastly increase the size of the database and slow down the forum to do it, which is why SMF doesn't do it that way (and never has in any of its 20 year history)

As arantor said, but shorter...
No.

We can't easily do that for reasons above.

Kindred, he wasn't asking if SMF would change it going forward, he was asking how he could change his - which is a somewhat different question...

Wait a second ... if I read one topic of several that have new replies in a board, nothing is marked read except the topic I read.

Or am I not understanding the question?

@nclmccain - do you mean board or the entire forum?

The OP is talking about the icons on the front page/boardindex.

If you read a single thread in a board, then the "unread messages" icon (on.png) on the board index turns off (off.png)

individual threads remain marked as "new" if they have not been opened.

Exactly. In other software it would stay marked on as unread until all posts where read in that forum.

I also have an unrealted question. I have two users who live in the same home and one has to input CAPTCHA everytime they post or send a PM is there a way to disable that?

Thanks for the help.

Kindred

I honestly don't know what you mean by "every other software ", because almost every hosted forum that I have used does it the same way that we do.

Aa for the captcha..  that's your setting... you have members required to validate with captcha... probably based on post count - and the second user has a lower post count

Best option -- prevent the spammers from ever registering and don't require confirmed users from doing captcha at all

In reality, I think it's only phpBB and MyBB that actually do it as described; Invision and XF certainly don't, and I haven't seen anyone run a vB in years where it gets enough activity to still matter; most people still running vB are running years-old versions, and often highly modded so all bets are off.

More modern systems - Discourse, Flarum, NodeBB - don't even bother with forum-level read indicators at all.

She's the only one who's brought up having a problem. I've checked the captcha and I have a 0 set for post count.

As for the forum images. I usually use phpBB for projects so that's what I was used to.

Arantor

And phpBB's internal storage of what has been read is completely different to SMF's. No getting away from that fact.

But it's a stretch to say "every other forum" when in fact it's the minority of platforms that truly act that way.

Then your system is not behaving as intended or as designed.
What mods installed?

Are you talking everywhere or just here?

Just on my SMF forum. These are the mods I have installed.

in the future, please list mods or other requests as text, not images. I'm usually reading from my phone, and images are much harder to parse.

However, I don't see anything there that would affect the user's activity...
and, if your settings actually do not use the captcha set to zero post count (and she has more than 1 post?)

then something is very weird in your system -- especially if she is the ONLY user that it's happening to -- because based on those settings and the mods you listed, there is no way that it should be happening for ANY user and no way in heck that it would only affect ONE user...

These are 2 different settings.

Posting:
Admin -> Configuration -> Anti-Spam ->  Post count under which users must pass verification to make a post

PMs:
Admin -> Configuration -> Anti-Spam ->  Post count under which users must pass verification when sending personal messages

If you set the number to 0, the verification for registered users should be disabled. If you set it 1 it should be disabled after 1 successful (counted) post.
If you want to completely disable verification, set the limit to 0 and uncheck the related setting above the limits.
Moderators are excempt of post verification, Admins are excempt of all verification.

EDIT: I was a bit wrong at first, tried and tested, corrected my post.

How you can help SMF

nclmccain

Sorry about the image. I'm on my ok e and it's easier to screenshot and upload than type each one out.

I'll check the settings again.

nclmccain

The problem has sorted itself out and she hasn't been asked for verification.
