Hello I'm no computer genius and I tried to read through all of the installing instructions and I don't understand a single bit of it, and I can't open php files on my computer.

Can someone please tell me how to fix this the simpler way please? Would love to try this product out!

Welcome to the site kiyoto :)

Can you tell us what you've already done, are you trying to run SMF on your local PC do you have hosting? Is PHP and your database setup?

kiyoto

Hello thank you ^w^ and yes I was trying to run it on my local PC and I don't have hosting, also I don't know how to set up a PHP database, this is all pretty new to me

ziycon

You can do it one of two ways, use a prebundled package like WAMP (http://www.simplehelp.net/2008/08/25/how-to-install-and-setup-apache-mysql-and-php-in-windows/) or you can install/configure all the separate pieces of software, which can take a bit of time to setup if its your first time (http://www.artfulsoftware.com/php_mysql_win.html).

kiyoto

Ok I'll try the first one then lol

ziycon

Let us know how you get on and if you need any help.

kiyoto

Ok thank you! After I finished downloading it a message popped up saying the publisher od wampserver2.2d-x64.exe couldn't be verified

ziycon

That's ok, just means your PC couldn't verify the author, not a biggy.

kiyoto

Okay it has been installed

ziycon

Follow this article on how to setup SMF.
Installing SMF

kiyoto

Ok but I think I messed up the changing of the password codes in the WAMP file and can't access phpMyAdmin file

ziycon

If its just a fresh install I would uninstall WAMP and re-install it.

So Simple Machines runs on AMP?  Does SMF require anything else?

I have installed LAMP (Linux) on my machines here at the home/office.  I am thinking of getting a forum or two going, but will test run them on the local network first.

The requirements are listed here:

http://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/Requirements_and_recommendations

If you are going to run a local copy you would normally install something like WAMP or XAMPP on your PC for testing purposes.  LAMP should work as it gives you the components you need for a general purpose webserver.
