Title: [Theme] TechHead (SMF v.1.0.5 - 1.1RC2)
Post by: bloc on November 30, 2004, 07:20:34 PM
TechHead is a theme I made recently and want to share it with you. It has more of a "tech" feel to it than anything. Hovering over the main buttons gives an light/dark effect on the texts.

Added:
- 2 PSD files for making of the top buttons (home, help,search etc.). They use a font called Alien Encounters and should work in Photoshop 7+ at least. You will need a "normal" image/button , and a "over" state button. So save your file from the first like xxxx.gif, and from the second PSD like xxxx_over.gif. Chop off on the width when the text is ready..I have made them 150px wide, which should cover a lot. The files are attached to this post.

The code in index.template.php would also need to be copied of course.

- For the other regular buttons, there is a button-generator at:
http://www.tinyportal.net/button-generator/techhead.php

Download:
- for SMF 1.1RC2:
http://www.tinyportal.net/files/download.php?file=techhead11rc2.zip

- for SMF 1.1RC1:
http://www.tinyportal.net/files/download.php?file=techhead11rc1.zip

- for SMF 1.1beta3:
http://www.tinyportal.net/files/download.php?file=techhead11.tar.gz (http://www.tinyportal.net/files/download.php?file=techhead11.tar.gz)
http://www.tinyportal.net/files/download.php?file=techhead11.zip (http://www.tinyportal.net/files/download.php?file=techhead11.zip)

- for SMF 1.0.5:
http://www.tinyportal.net/files/download.php?file=techhead.tar.gz (http://www.tinyportal.net/files/download.php?file=techhead.tar.gz)
http://www.tinyportal.net/files/download.php?file=techhead.zip (http://www.tinyportal.net/files/download.php?file=techhead.zip)

The graphics is free to use within the context of a SMF forum.

(down right now due to error with mysql)

It was not loading a while ago, but now it seems as if the Settings.php file has become corrupt.  You may wish to check Settings_bak.php.

Thanks for the help, [Unknown]!

I was scratching my head over this, since the database was good again, but still got errors. When checking the settings.php file, it was indeed 0 bytes....

I love this one also, although I am unable to use it on our site because of the menu.  I guess you wouldn't consider offering the PSDs of a Blank Button?  I know you don't share the PSD files, but on out site we have coppermine, working on a chat, and will be adding another section for Tournaments.  So, I need to make additions to the main menu. This as well as Juno have awesome buttons, that I can not reproduce to where they match.

Otherwise, I love your entire collection! :)

I have tinkered with a button-generator for some time....I will make some effort to make it usable. With all my theme buttonsets in there so that people can make their own buttons.

But you say can't use because of the menu? Is it the lack of custom buttons..? Or do you need the whole bar ( in some of the themes) elsewhere..?

Well as I mentioned before in some of your themes, the bar is too short, but I can work around that. So, yes it the lack of customized buttons.   For example in this theme I need to add a Gallery button on the   menu. I would like it to Match your buttons with the rollover.  So I would need to create both buttons and the background of the button is too complex to the erase and remake the image like I did in the Helios themes. Same with the Menu on Juno.

(https://www.simplemachines.org/community/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.bloczone.net%2Fsmf%2FThemes%2Ftechhead%2Fimages%2Fenglish%2Fprofile_over.gif&hash=92487a38db1b7d115ebffdfb49882523a640b8ad)

There is just no way to edit a current button to customize it.  Even with the PSD's for a blank button your theme is SO complex it will take some work to match the "font" use created.  I have looked into using the menu bar on some other pages, although I have set up our forum with multiple themes to make everyone happy with the looks, so it would be next to impossible to use them on other pages.  So, no basically is just the lacking of adding buttons on the forums for Chat, Gallery, Tournaments and other things as needed.  I can't imagine the work that would have to go into a generator for all your themes.  This would be nice, but I think a lot to ask.  A simple release of a Blank Wide Button for each theme would solve all my problems.  I could then recreate the "font" on it, trim to size and then add it to the menu.

I see. I can put up a blank button, no problem. But with a generator I am thinking more long-term. Different languages, language strings that are wrong  ::), custom buttons with icons etc. The idea isn't new, I just havent had the time yet.

With this theme you can easily stretch a button to fit your preferred width, keeping the height intact though - since the graphic has no sideborders. Put in the font ( its a font called Alien Encounters ) and use some stroke on it - white 2px outside.... For the initial button fade the *stroke effect only* to about 60%).

For mouseover-button name it yourname2 and copy the script part. (Remember to change id=yourname and name=yourname) .

Superb Theme but I do have a request for a custom button. I use the Integrated Chat mod and I've tried to create a chat button with the blank ypu provided but I just couldn't get the font right.

So as a Temp measure I've edited all the buttons and added a chat one so at least I can use the theme but a proper button for chat would be great and the code to add it into the theme would be useful. If you could do that great and then I'll just switch all the buttons back to the theme set as provided.

Great work and keep it up.

Look back in this thread and you will see a empty button. As for the code , try to look in Index.template.php in the function "template_menu()" .

You could just copy one of the buttons there(code-wise) and exchange the image-name and link with your own.

If you need exactly what to put in, let me know and I will supply the code for you. I need the details of links and such then.

Here is only one big problem, if you need other language buttons than english it seems to be impossible to get the main menu buttons in your own language. Button generator doesn't make such model buttons. Would be nice if Bloc make some buttons for languages that have own support area in SMF, i.e. languages that is available for SMF. I need Finnish buttons, if here is someone who can make this buttons i would appreciate it.  :D

Sorry for not seeing this...easiest would be to find the <body>'; in index.template.php and just add your own html after there, like <body><img ... /><some other html here...>';

Be sure to have that '; at the end though, it means the end of a echo statement in PHP.

No online on posts page is fine; but on the posts page offline is missing an image and on the profile page online/offline are missing an image.

Simply open index.template.php and find the function template_menu(). There you will see all the buttons listed in code bits, just insert the line below inbetween one of those.

The line will have to look like this:

                echo '<a href="link"><img name="search" id="search"  onmouseover="javascript:document.search.src=\'' . $settings['images_url'] . '/' . $context['user']['language'] . '/search_over.gif\'" onmouseout="javascript:document.search.src=\'' . $settings['images_url'] . '/' . $context['user']['language'] . '/search.gif\'" src="' . $settings['images_url'] . '/' . $context['user']['language'] . '/search.gif" alt="' . $txt[182] . '" style="margin: 0px 0;" border="0" /></a>';

As you can see, all the bold items will need to be changed ..and you also need to make 2 buttons for the rollover to work. Here "search" is used, so just exchange that with yours.

ok great...

but one more question...

                echo '<a href="link"><img name="search" id="search"  onmouseover="javascript:document.search.src=\'' . $settings['images_url'] . '/' . $context['user']['language'] . '/search_over.gif\'" onmouseout="javascript:document.search.src=\'' . $settings['images_url'] . '/' . $context['user']['language'] . '/search.gif\'" src="' . $settings['images_url'] . '/' . $context['user']['language'] . '/search.gif" alt="' . $txt[182] . '" style="margin: 0px 0;" border="0" /></a>';

What's this number in bold???
And is it ok if it is repeated in my new buttons, or should I change it???
Title: Re: [Theme] TechHead (SMF v.1.0.5 / 1.1beta3)
Post by: bloc on September 14, 2005, 10:43:41 AM
Its the "help" text you get when hovering over a button..and that variable - $txt[182] - stands for "search" in language files. So yes, you should change it for other buttons - but it will not stop anything if you don't :)

Just exchange the "on.gif", "off.gif" and "on2.gif"(for new posts in child boards) with your own and you should be fine. In the "TechHead/images" folder.

For the smaller ones, use "new_some.gif" and new_none.gif".

I did a fresh install of 1.1 rc and then loaded your techhead 1.1 beta 3 and get allto of error when i click on " mark as read" on "modify" i get the following error

error is
Session verification failed. Please try logging out and back in again, and then try again.

when i switch back to default theme i dont get that error only on the helios and techead theme and that is after a brand new clean install of smf 1.1 rc so it is definately somthing with the theme, when are your plans to update these?

Bloc, I love the theme - but I'm getting the session verification error when my members try to give karma. I know with helios multi the problem was in the display.template.php, so I'm assuming that is the problem with this one as well. How do I fix it though? With helios multi I just uploaded the newer version of display.template.php. I tried that with this one as well, but it didn't change anything. Help please? :D

It doesn't modify the post template for itself - just use the one from default theme. So if default/Post.template is modded, then this theme will just use that modded file.

You need to study the code in index.template.php and copy it to your needs. its in the template_menu() part of the file.

What are the link for the button? and the graphic filename?

Same thing I've been searching the world over for since I'm not so good with coding. I thought it would be easy enough but it really isn't. Do I seriously need to waste more time in my life learning code so that I can add a stinking banner to my forum? LOL! I wish there was a tutorial out there that would explain the process of adding a banner/logo to this theme, Barney-style.

All my themes here will be. Some will be quick to update, others (the ones with many changed templates) will take longer. TechHead is not the hardest one. :)

Any chance at a rules button to use in the top (with the mouse over like the chat one that got made). What'd really be nice is having the extra button set in the button generator :)

you need to change index.template file. and add this code:

'/topbar_right.gif" alt="*" style="margin: 0px;" border="0" /></td></tr></table>';

add after

        echo '
<img src="', $settings['header_logo_url'], '" style="margin: 0px;" alt="', $context['forum_name'], '" />';

echo '
</td>
<td align="right" >
<img src="', $settings['images_url'], '/smflogo.gif" style="margin: 0px; border="0" " alt=""/>
                                            </td>
                                       </tr></table> ';

next line is the code below:

    { echo '<div id="upshrinkHeader"', empty($options['collapse_header']) ? '' : ' style="display: none;"', '>';

     if ($context['user']['is_logged']){
